The horticulturalists Rolf and Anne Bucher from Stuttgart came to our area for the fifth time this year to lay out kitchen gardens near family dwellings in Ghosaldanga, Bishnubati and the surrounding areas; they also supervised the cultivation of these gardens. Originally they were sponsored by Dr. Monika Golembiewski; in the meantime private sponsors have made it possible for them to come to us. Up to the present, kitchen gardens have been laid out for a total of 350 families in 13 villages.

Rolf and Anne Bucher rode their bikes to the villages daily and were assisted by Nilu Murmu from Ghosaldanga, who is responsible for the continuation of the project during the absence of the German couple.

The husband and wife encouraged the planting of Horseradish trees (Moringa Oleifera), the leaves of which when dried and pulverized are of significant nutritional value. They harvest the leaves of existing trees and plant new ones. The leaves are processed to make biscuits which are eaten by the children in our schools and halls of residence. On 22nd November Rolf and Anne Bucher left from Martin Kämpchen’s house and will probably return in July 2015.
